RUSAL mulai melaksanakan dua proyek utama: pembangunan pabrik peleburan aluminium Boguchansky dan pembangunan pabrik peleburan aluminium Taishet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tahun 2008<\/strong><br \/>\nRUSAL membeli lebih dari 25% saham Norilsk Nickel, yang merupakan produsen nikel dan paladium terbesar di dunia serta salah satu produsen platinum dan tembaga terbesar. Perusahaan tersebut kemudian bekerja sama dengan Samruk Holdings untuk mendirikan perusahaan eksplorasi minyak patungan yang beroperasi di deposit batubara Ekibastuz di Kazakhstan, serta membeli pabrik perakitan katoda di Tiongkok, Taigu Cathode. Permintaan aluminium anjlok ke level terendah sepanjang sejarah dan harganya pun turun, yang tentu saja memberikan pukulan berat bagi kondisi keuangan perusahaan serta memicu ketegangan dengan para kreditor. Serangkaian langkah yang bertujuan untuk memangkas biaya, mengoptimalkan produksi, dan mengurangi biaya produksi telah memungkinkan perusahaan ini bertahan dari krisis dengan kerugian minimal, sekaligus meletakkan dasar bagi pengembangan dan diversifikasi bisnis lebih lanjut. Dari Oktober 2009 hingga Desember 2009, Rusal menandatangani sejumlah perjanjian dengan bank-bank Rusia dan asing, merestrukturisasi utang sebesar US$16,8 miliar. Akibatnya, utang perusahaan kepada banyak bank asing sebesar $7,4 miliar menjalani restrukturisasi selama empat tahun, dengan opsi untuk memperpanjang transaksi tersebut selama tiga tahun lagi. Sebanyak 70 lembaga kredit berpartisipasi dalam transaksi restrukturisasi tersebut dan merevisi sekitar 50 perjanjian pinjaman.<\/p>\n<p>Meskipun menghadapi berbagai masalah selama krisis, pada Juli 2009, RUSAL berhasil menyelesaikan modernisasi lingkungan pada pabrik peleburan aluminium Krasnoyarsk yang pembangunannya dimulai pada tahun 2004.
