Jumlah bahan tahan api yang dikonsumsi oleh industri aluminium setiap tahunnya jauh lebih besar daripada jumlah total bahan tahan api yang dikonsumsi dalam proses peleburan tembaga, timbal, dan seng.<br \/>\nBerdasarkan proses industri peleburan aluminium, bahan tahan api untuk pengecoran kontinu dibagi menjadi dua kategori, yaitu bahan tahan api untuk aluminium elektrolitik dan bahan tahan api untuk tungku peleburan aluminium.<br \/>\n<strong>Industri aluminium elektrolitik modern menggunakan proses elektrolisis garam cair kriolit-alumina.<\/strong><br \/>\nKriolit cair berfungsi sebagai pelarut, alumina digunakan sebagai zat terlarut, badan karbon digunakan sebagai anoda, dan cairan aluminium digunakan sebagai katoda. Setelah arus searah yang kuat dialirkan, reaksi elektrokimia berlangsung pada kedua kutub di dalam sel elektrolitik pada suhu 900\u00b0C\u20131000\u00b0C.
