Proses degassing rotari bekerja berdasarkan prinsip peningkatan luas permukaan gas yang disuntikkan yang bersentuhan dengan logam. Semakin besar luas permukaannya, semakin tinggi laju perpindahan dari logam ke gas inert. Semakin kecil ukuran gelembung untuk volume gas tertentu, semakin besar pula luas permukaannya. Sebagai contoh, gelembung gas berdiameter 1\u201d memiliki luas permukaan sebesar 6 inci persegi. Jika gelembung yang sama dibagi menjadi gelembung-gelembung berdiameter 1\/16\u201d, luas permukaannya meningkat menjadi 96 inci persegi. Dengan kata lain, jika volume gas yang digunakan sama dan diameter gelembung dikurangi menjadi 1\/16 dari diameter aslinya, luas permukaan total akan meningkat sebesar 16 kali lipat. Unit degassing ini direkomendasikan untuk nitrogen atau argon kering. Kompatibilitas dengan gas khusus tidak dapat dijamin. Semua bagian unit yang terpapar gas, kecuali lancing grafit, terbuat dari baja tahan karat atau Buna-N (segel). Waktu degassing selama empat menit untuk cawan pelebur seberat 400 pon merupakan hal yang umum bila menggunakan gas nitrogen.
