Gugus penambat teradsorpsi pada permukaan partikel padat, dan rantai pelarutannya mengembang sepenuhnya di dalam medium untuk membentuk lapisan penghambat sterik guna mencegah flokulasi dan aglomerasi partikel padat, sehingga mencapai efek penghambatan sterik.<\/p>\n<p>Polielektrolit teradsorpsi secara elektrolitik pada permukaan partikel dalam medium dispersi air. Lapisan molekul polimer bermuatan tidak hanya dapat menolak ion-ion di sekitarnya melalui tolakan elektrostatik akibat muatannya sendiri, tetapi juga memanfaatkan hambatan sterik dari rantai pelarut untuk membuat partikel-partikel tersebut saling memantul.
