Kelarutan hidrogen dalam aluminium ditentukan oleh tekanan parsial hidrogen pada fase gas yang bersentuhan dengan lelehan aluminium. Ketika tekanan parsial hidrogen pada keadaan kesetimbangan yang sesuai dengan kandungan hidrogen dalam lelehan aluminium lebih besar daripada tekanan parsial hidrogen dalam gas aktual yang bersentuhan dengan lelehan aluminium, hidrogen dalam lelehan aluminium akan berdifusi ke fase gas untuk mencapai penghilangan hidrogen. Inilah prinsip penghilangan hidrogen melalui flotasi gelembung.
