La demanda de aluminio se desplom\u00f3 hasta m\u00ednimos hist\u00f3ricos y el precio tambi\u00e9n cay\u00f3, lo que, como es l\u00f3gico, supuso un duro golpe para la situaci\u00f3n financiera de la empresa y provoc\u00f3 tensiones con los acreedores. Una serie de medidas destinadas a recortar gastos, optimizar la producci\u00f3n y reducir los costes de producci\u00f3n han permitido a la empresa superar la crisis con p\u00e9rdidas m\u00ednimas, al tiempo que se sentaban las bases para un mayor desarrollo y diversificaci\u00f3n del negocio. Entre octubre y diciembre de 2009, Rusal firm\u00f3 una serie de acuerdos con bancos rusos y extranjeros, reestructurando una deuda por un total de US$16.8 mil millones. Como resultado, la deuda de la empresa con numerosos bancos extranjeros, que ascend\u00eda a $7. 4 mil millones, fue objeto de una reorganizaci\u00f3n a cuatro a\u00f1os, con la opci\u00f3n de prorrogar la operaci\u00f3n por otros tres a\u00f1os.
